Caption: Planetary nebula. Hubble space telescope image of the Hubble 5 "butterfly" or bipolar planetary nebula, with its 2 prominent lobes. The gas is formed of material ejected from the star at the centre of the nebula. The lobes occur because a disk of dust (not seen here) circling this star channels the "wind" of particles from the star like the nozzle of a jet engine. The heat generated by this "wind" causes the two lobes to expand like a hot-air balloon. Hubble 5 lies 2200 light years away in the constellation of Sagittarius. Image taken by Hubble's Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 on 9 September 1997.
