Caption: Pollen grains. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of hyssop (Hyssopus officinalis) pollen grains (green) on a petal. Pollen grains are produced in the anthers of the flower and contain the male gametes required for reproduction. Dispersal by insects carries the grains to other plants, resulting in the fertilisation of the female eggs present in the flower's carpel. Hyssop is a medicinal perennial found growing wild in southern and eastern Europe. Its flowers are used as a tonic and a sedative. Magnification: x1220 at 6x7cm size.
