Caption: Planetary nebula. Coloured X-ray image of the planetary nebula BD+30 3639. The image shows a hot bubble of gas at about 3 million degrees which surrounds a dying sun-like star. This forms when a two million kilometre per hour 'wind' of particles from the core of the star collides with gas previously thrown off from the outer layers. This nebula is about 5000 light years from Earth, and has been forming for about one thousand years. This image was made using the Chandra X-ray Observatory in Earth orbit.
