Caption: Retina nebula. Optical image of the bipolar planetary nebula IC4406. The nebula consists of gas thrown off in a cylindrical shell by a central star close to the end of its life. This side view does not show its doughnut-like shape. It is about 3500 light years from Earth. Photographed by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope in 2002.
