Caption: Sunflower pollination. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of pollen on a stigma of a sunflower plant (Helianthus sp.). The stigma, part of the flower's female reproductive structure, is curled over here, with pollen grains (spiky orange balls) adhering to the yellow trichomes (hairs) on its underside. The pollen grains carry the male reproductive cells, designed to travel down the style to the ovary (neither seen) and so fertilise the plant. As a member of the Compositae family, the sunflower's flower head is made up of many small florets (true flowers). Magnification: x170 at 6x7cm size.
