Caption: Kepler's Supernova Remnant. Composite image of Kepler's Supernova Remnant (SNR), or Supernova 1604, found 13,000 light years away in the constellation Ophiuchus. The bubble-shaped shroud of dust and gas surrounding the exploded star is 14 light years across and is expanding at 2000 kilometres per second. Kepler's SNR was first observed on 9 October 1604. It remained visible to the human eye for 18 months and was named after Johannes Kepler, who studied it extensively. Three space observatories, Chandra X-ray Observatory, Spitzer Space Telescope and Hubble Space Telescope, combined images to create this picture.
