Caption: Radio image of the Vela supernova remnant (SNR) recorded at a wavelength of 11cm by the Parkes radio telescope, Australia. The supernova exploded about 11,000 years ago, producing an expanding shell of gas & dust that forms the remnant. At the centre of the SNR is the Vela pulsar (black dot). The pulsar is a neutron star, the collapsed core of the original star that exploded. It spins 13 times a second, emitting pulses of radiation (light & radio waves). In this image, radio emiss- ion from the SNR is coloured according to intensity, ranging from red (most intense) to purple (least intense).
