Caption: False-colour infrared image of the Milky Way taken by the Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS). This is the view looking towards the Galactic centre and shows a strip of infrared radiation from warm dust lying within the plane of the Galaxy. The pinkish band is radiation from widespread interstellar dust which has been warmed by starlight. The yellow patches are regions of star formation; clouds of gas and dust illuminated by newly-formed stars.
