Caption: The Milky Way, our own galaxy, seen over a line of trees. The large bright patch just left of centre is the star cloud M24. A dark band of interstellar dust may be seen running diagonally across the centre. This part of the Milky Way lies in the constellation Sagittarius, and is roughly toward the centre of our galaxy. M24 was described by Messier in 1764, but is now known not to be a discrete cluster. It is in fact some of the stars of our galaxy viewed through a 'window' in one of the interstellar dust lanes.
