Caption: The Milky Way, seen in the constellations of Scorpius (right) and Sagittarius (left of lower centre). The brightest body visible is the planet Jupiter. The bright orange star to the lower right of Jupiter is Antares. The Milky Way is a disc- shaped spiral galaxy containing at least 100 billion stars. Seen from Earth, which is located in one of the galaxy's spiral arms, it appears as a band of stars and illuminated gas nebulae, with dark areas where dust clouds block out the light from stars behind. The area seen here is one of the parts of the galaxy most densely populated with stars. Photographed in Arizona, USA.
