Caption: Milky Way. Optical image of the Milky Way running through the sky by a silhouetted tree. The central white area of the Milky Way lies in the constellation Sagittarius, and the band of light is seen extending into the neighbouring constell- ation Scorpius (centre right). The bright star- like point at upper left is the planet Jupiter. The Milky Way is a disc-shaped spiral galaxy containing at least 100 billion stars. Seen from Earth, which is located in one of the Milky Way's spiral arms, it appears as a band of stars, clusters and nebulae (red/pink regions). The darker lanes are caused by large dust clouds blocking out the light from stars behind.
