Caption: Milky Way. Artwork of our galaxy, the Milky Way, seen from above. This image is based on measurements taken of stars and their motions in our surroundings. The Sun is thought to lie between half and two-thirds of the way out from the nucleus (yellow) in one of the spiral arms (blue). The colour differences are due to the stars that comprise each region. In the nucleus, older, yellower stars predominate, while in the arms hot new stars are being produced, which have a blue colour. The Milky Way is thought to be around 120,000 light years wide, and to contain some 100 billion stars.
