Caption: Milky Way galaxy. Top and side views of the Milky Way galaxy, which contains our solar system. The Sun is one of billions of stars in the Milky Way. It is found in one of the spiral arms. The Milky Way is a spiral galaxy. It has a large nucleus (yellow) made up of mainly older, redder stars. The spiral arms (blue) contain mainly hot young stars (blue) and starbirth regions (pink). The galaxy is surrounded by a halo of globular star clusters (red dots). These are huge balls of hundreds of thousands of very old, densely packed stars. The Milky Way is around 120,000 light years in diameter.
