Caption: Pollen release from lodgepole pine trees (Pinus contorta). Pollen is produced in massive quantities by cones (brown), the male reproductive parts of the tree. The pollen is blown on the wind to reach trees that may be some considerable distance away where it pollinates the female reproductive structures. Lodgepole pine is found throughout North America from Alaska to Mexico.
