Caption: X-ray image of the centre of the Milky Way galaxy (300 light years in diameter) taken by the Einstein satellite. The colour coding runs from blue for low X-ray emission through red to white representing the highest source. The very centre (white spot surrounded by green) coincides exactly with the centre of the galaxy as determined by infrared and radio measurements. The energy emitted here in the X-ray band is as much as that emitted by a thousand stars in all wavelengths. The oblong region at the bottom is a double star system, which is an intense source of X-rays.
