Caption: Optical image of the Sculptor dwarf galaxy which is situated 270,000 light years away from Earth in the constellation of Sculptor. Dwarf galaxies are the faintest known type of galaxy. They are composed of very old stars and contain no detectable amount of interstellar gas and dust. It is believed that dwarf galaxies represent the most common type but, due to their faintness, are very hard to detect. Sculptor dwarf galaxy is a satellite of our own galaxy, the Milky Way, as are most dwarf galaxies discovered so far.
