Caption: Young galaxies. 18 panels showing showing distant, faint young galaxies as seen by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). These galaxies are each found about 11 billion light years from Earth, and could be the seeds of today's galaxies. Each object is 2000-3000 light years across, around 5-10% the size of an average galaxy. The objects are found in a region about 2 million light years across, a far higher density than today's galaxies. The HST Deep Field image from which these frames are taken took more than one day to expose, during which time the HST made 48 orbits of the Earth.
