Caption: Optical photograph of the Sombrero Galaxy (M104, NGC 4594), a spiral galaxy (type Sa/Sb) in the constellation of Virgo. The galaxy is seen almost edge-on and the dark stripe running across it is due to dust lying within the plane of the galaxy. The photograph was taken with the four-metre telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory. It has been hand-coloured.
