Sombrero Galaxy. Optical image of the Sombrero Galaxy (M104, NGC 4594), almost edge-on. This spiral galaxy lies around 50 million light years away, in the constellation Virgo. A dark band of dust stretches across its equatorial plane. The large central bulge contains primarily mature stars. Image taken by the FORS1 instrument on the VLT, Paranal Observatory, Chile.
