Caption: Spiral galaxy (NGC3949). Hubble Space Telescope image of a spiral galaxy 50 million light years away in the direction of the constellation Ursa Major (Great Bear). This galaxy is similar in shape and structure to the Milky Way nucleus. Images such as this are consequently useful as a way of understanding our own galaxy. The image was produced by combining exposures through blue, visible, and near infra- red filters.
