Caption: Grass pollen. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of pollen grains (green) from a grass plant. Pollen grains contain the male sex cells of a flowering plant. In the process of pollination, the pollen grains are transported from a flower's anthers to the female reproductive parts of a plant. This allows the female and male sex cells to combine in the formation of a seed. Grasses, a major food source for grazing animals, are also used to create garden lawns. Grasses are one of the first plants to colonise a new area of land. Their roots bind the soil together, helping to prevent erosion. Magnification: x1300 at 10 centimetres wide.
