Caption: Elliptical galaxy NGC 1132, combined X-ray and visible light image. The blue halo is the X-ray glow from hot gases in the galaxy, detected by the Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO). The central galaxy (brighter region within the purple area) and surrounding galaxies, were optically imaged by the Hubble Space Telescope. NGC 1132 is unusual in that it contains large amounts of dark matter and hot gases, a feature more often found in galaxy clusters than a single galaxy. NGC 1132 is found some 300 million light years from Earth, in the constellation Eridanus.
