Caption: Interacting galaxies. Optical image of two interacting galaxies, the large barred spiral NGC 6872 (centre) and its small companion IC 4970. This pair is 300 million light years from Earth in the constellation Pavo. The bright object lower right of centre is a foreground star. This image was made with the 8.2m Very Large Telescope 'Antu' at the Cerro Paranal Observatory, Chile.
