Caption: Robert's Quartet, interacting galaxies. This group of four galaxies is located in the constellation of Phoenix, at a distance of around 160 million light years. NGC 87 (upper right) is an irregular galaxy. NGC 88 (centre) is a spiral galaxy with a diffuse envelope of gas or dust surrounding it. NGC 89 (lower centre) is a spiral galaxy with two large spiral arms. NGC 92 (upper left) is a spiral galaxy that has been distorted by its interaction with the other galaxies. A long streamer of stars, gas and dust (centre left) has been pulled out of this galaxy. The other galaxies in this group also show signs of interactions and increased star formation. Image obtained by the FORS2 instrument on ESO's Very Large Telescope.
