Caption: Grass pollen. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a pollen grain from a grass plant (family Gramineae). Pollen grains contain the male sex cells of a flowering plant. Millions of pollen grains are produced by each flowering plant. In the process of pollination, some of these pollen grains are transported from a flower's anthers to the female reproductive parts of a plant. This allows the female and male sex cells to combine in the formation of a seed. The grass plants are found worldwide, and include the world's major cereal crops. Magnification: x2100 when printed 10cm wide.
