Caption: Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), infrared image. The LMC is a dwarf galaxy, and a satellite of our own Milky Way galaxy. It contains regions of emission nebula (green, yellow and red), where radiation from hot young stars ionises surrounding gas, causing it to glow. There are also reflection nebulae (shown in blue), caused by dust reflecting the light of nearby stars. This image is a mosaic of over 300,000 tiles taken with NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope, an observatory orbiting the Earth.
