Caption: Great Andromeda Galaxy. Coloured radio image of the Great Andromeda Galaxy (M31; NGC 224). The ring-like distribution of radio emission indicates that Andromeda's magnetic field & cosmic-ray par- ticles are concentrated around its centre at a distance of about 30,000 light years. New stars are forming in this region, a process which may be aided by the magnetic fields. Andromeda is located 2.2 million light years from Earth, making it the nearest galaxy to out own, the Milky Way. It is about 200,000 light years across and has a spiral shape. Image taken at a wavelength of 6.3 centi- metres by the Effelsberg radio telescope, Germany.
