Caption: Spiral galaxy M83. Optical image of the spiral galaxy Messier 83 (NGC 5236). M83 is very similar in size and shape to our own galaxy, the Milky Way. M83 is 15 million light years from Earth in the constellation Hydra. This image was made with the 8.2-metre Very Large Telescope 'Antu' at the Cerro Paranal Observatory, Chile.
