Caption: X-ray image of active galaxy M87 (NGC 4486), a black hole candidate. The colour coding runs from blue for the faintest regions of x-ray emission to yellow & red for the most intense. M87 is well known for the great "jet" of material that shoots out from its core (the left-hand bright spot); the x-ray emission from high-energy electrons in the jet forms the red & yellow object to the right of the galactic centre. The image shows the raw data recorded by the Einstein Observatory satellite at a wavelength of 0.4-8 nanometres.
