Caption: Galactic jet. Optical image of the core of galaxy Messier 87 (NGC 4486), showing a prominent energetic jet (blue). The jet is a collimated stream of material thrown out by the accretion disk of a massive black hole at the galaxy's centre. This image was made using the 8.2-metre Very Large Telescope 'Antu' at the Cerro Paranal Observatory, Chile.
