Caption: Quasar 3C 273. False-colour X-ray image of quasar 3C 273 and its jet, recorded by the Einstein Observatory satellite. 3C 273 was the first quasar to be identified and is the closest to Earth at a distance of 2100 million light years. 3C 273 is a powerful emitter of radiation at all wavelengths. It emits over a million times more X-rays than our Milky Way galaxy. In this image, X-ray brightness is coded according to intensity, with the most intense areas in pale blue, green and yellow. The green and yellow spot at lower right is the jet. The "spokes" round the quasar are due to the imaging system. Reference: Figure 12.36 in THE NEW ASTRONOMY.
