Galaxy distribution. Computer model showing the distribution of galaxies in an area 30 million light years across when the Universe was 35% of its present age. The galaxies are colour coded according to age: red are the oldest and blue the youngest. The model assumes that most of the matter in the Universe is in the form of cold dark matter (CDM). In the CDM scenario, galaxies form by a process of collisions and mergers; small and dense objects form first, and subsequent collisions create objects the size of galaxies. The galaxies are seen to cluster together in the form of filaments, as observed in the sky.
