Caption: Oil seed rape pollen grain. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a pollen grain from an oil seed rape flower (Brassica napus). The outer wall (exine) of the pollen grain is highly sculptured to improve its adherence to pollinating insects. The grain has three furrows (two seen) through which the pollen tube emerges at the time of germination. Each grain of pollen contains a male gamete (reproductive cell) that is intended to fertilise an egg or ovule (female gamete) and initiate the formation of a seed for a new plant. Magnification: x2134 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
