Caption: Apollo 11 count-down. View of the launch control at the Kennedy Space Center, 52 minutes before the launch of Apollo 11. The figure standing at right is Lt. Gen. Samuel Phillips, Director of the Apollo Programme. Apollo 11 was launched on 16 July 1969, carrying Neil Armstrong, Edwin Aldrin and Michael Collins to the Moon. Armstrong and Aldrin landed on the Moon on 20 July, whilst Collins stayed in the orbiting command module. Armstrong and Aldrin walked on the Moon on 21 July. The Apollo 11 mission ended with a safe return on 24 July 1969.
