The rocket was used to launch the satellite into orbit around the Earth. AMS 23 (previously called Worldsat 3), is a US geostationary communications satellite weighing 5 tonnes. It was launched from Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazahkstan, on 29 December 2005. Its geostationary orbit allows it to stay in position over the Asia-Pacific region, providing voice, video and internet service.
