Caption: Rocket production facility. Workers standing next to rockets at the Progress State Research and Production Rocket Space Center (TsSKB-Progress) in Samara, Russia. This facility is where the Soyuz rockets are designed and constructed. Rocket building at this location began in 1958 under the Soviet Union, and the first Soyuz rockets were built here in 1966. More than 1700 Soyuz rockets were built over the next 40 years. The latest designs, in the early 21st century, are being used to carry crew and supplies to the International Space Station, as well as to launch commercial and military satellites. Each of the four boosters of a Soyuz rocket is around 20 metres long and 3 metres across. Photographed in 2006.
