Caption: Cosmos satellite launch, at Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan. Cosmos (Kosmos in Russian) is the generic name for any satellite that does not have a designated program. Their uses range from military to scientific. As of June 2007, over 2400 Cosmos satellites have been launched since 1962. The satellite itself is in the upper stage, sitting on stop of the rocket below it. The rocket used here is a Zenit-2 launch vehicle. Photographed on 29 June 2007.
