Caption: Early rocket test by the VfR, Germany, 1930s. The German Verein fur Raumschiffahrt (VfR, Spaceflight Society) was active from 1927 to 1933, carrying out pioneering work that laid the foundations for space flight. It is thought that this picture shows a four-stick Repulsor rocket, one of the later designs built by the VfR. The engine's fuel tanks are being filled with liquid oxygen. The cold temperature of the liquid oxygen is causing frost to form at the bottom of the tank behind the ladder. The Repulsor rockets were the most successful of the VfR rockets, reaching a height of over 1 kilometre.
