Caption: Analysis of water for Russian astronauts. Researcher holding a test tube being used to test a sample of drinking water used for space missions by Russian astronauts. Analysis of this water confirms that it is richer in minerals than the water used by American astronauts. This is due to the purification system used, which involves silver. Drinking water that is used by astronauts on long-term missions, like those to the International Space Station (ISS), is purified to reduce the chances of microbial growth in the water. Pure water also reduces the amount of maintenance needed on the plumbing. This analytical work is being carried out by SMAT (the Turin Metropolitan Water Society), in Italy.
