Caption: Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) showing the germination of a pollen grain on the stigma of a turnip flower, Brassica campestris. A pollen tube has grown out of the pollen grain at centre; the tube grows down into one of the finger-like projections that form the stigma, through the style (the column that supports the stigma), to reach the ovaries at the base of the style. The tube protects & conveys two male gametes (sperm cells) which it releases into an ovule (egg) to produce fertilisation. Magnification: X 410 for 35mm size, X 820 for 6x7cm size.
