Caption: Vanguard rocket exploding on its launch pad during a test launch. This test was part of the International Geophysical Year (IGY) program to determine atmospheric density and take other measurements. The first stage of the rocket failed after two seconds, and the rocket was destroyed. This occurred on 6th December 1957 at Cape Canaveral, Florida, USA.
