Caption: Rhesus monkey astronaut. Sam, the Rhesus monkey, after his ride in the Little Joe-2 spacecraft. During the flight, Sam, seen here strapped to a modified chair, experienced three minutes of weightlessness. NASA used Rhesus monkeys and chimpanzees to help determine the effects of spaceflight and weightlessness on humans before launching the first American astronaut Alan Shepard in May 1961. This image was taken on 12 April 1959.
