Caption: Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Edwin Aldrin wait for a recovery helicopter after splashdown in the central Pacific. The three crew members, wearing biological isolation garments, were transferred to the recovery ship the USS Hornet and confined to a mobile quarantine unit. They remained in quarantine for 18 days until 10 August 1969. Apollo 11 splashed down, after the historic lunar landing mission, on 24 July, 1969, about 1500 km southwest of Hawaii and only 22 km from the waiting recovery ship.
