Caption: The flame from the Apollo 16 Lunar Module "Orion" creates a kaleidoscopic effect as it lifts off from the lunar surface on April 23, 1972. The photo was taken by a TV camera mounted on Apollo 16's Lunar Rover vehicle, which was left behind on the moon. Apollo 16 astronauts John W. Young & Charles M. Duke landed on the moon, while Thomas K. Mattingly remained in the Command & Service Module (CSM) in lunar orbit. Apollo 16 was launched on April 21, 1972, & returned to Earth 12 days later.
