Caption: Lunar rendezvous: astronaut Charles Conrad standing next to the Surveyor 3 spacecraft on the Moon. Conrad arrived on Apollo 12, his lunar module may be seen on the horizon at centre. Surveyor 3 landed on the Moon in Oceanus Procellarum on 17 April 1967. It made various excavation and bearing tests on the lunar surface as part of the planning for the Apollo series. Apollo 12 landed 160 metres from Surveyor 3 on 19 November 1969. Conrad visited Surveyor 3 to remove its TV camera and other components for return to Earth. These were studied to assess the effects of long exposure to the lunar environment. This photo was taken by fellow Apollo 12 astronaut Alan Bean.
