Caption: Lunar arrival: Astronaut Shepard shields his eyes from the intense sunlight, shortly after taking his first steps on the Moon's surface during the Apollo 14 mission. Apollo 14 arrived on the Moon on 5 February 1971. Astronauts Alan Shepard and Edgar Mitchell stayed on the Moon for 33 hours 31 minutes, performing two excursions on the surface totalling 9 hours 23 minutes. Astronaut Stuart Roosa remained in the orbiting Command Module. The mission ended with a successful re-entry to Earth on 9 February 1971.
