Caption: America on the Moon. Astronaut Harrison Schmitt stands next to the US flag on the Moon during the Apollo 17 mission. The bright object in the sky is the Earth. Schmitt and Eugene Cernan arrived on the Moon at Taurus- Littrow on 11 December 1972 after a four day journey. They made three excursions on the surface, totalling 22 hours. Ronald Evans remained in lunar orbit in the command module. All three returned safely on 19 December 1972. This was the last Apollo Moon mission - Cernan, who took this photograph, was the last man to step on the Moon.
