Caption: Fallen Astronaut sculpture on the surface of the Moon. This sculpture of an astronaut in a spacesuit, created by the Belgium Paul Van Hoeydonck, was placed on the moon by the astronauts of Apollo 15. Next to the statuette is a plaque with the names of eight American astronauts and six Russian cosmonauts who had died during spaceflights or training exercises. The statuette, which had to be lightweight yet sturdy and able to withstand the Moon's temperature extremes, was made from aluminium. Apollo 15, which launched on 26th July 1971, was the fourth mission to land on the Moon.
