Caption: Apollo-Soyuz Test Project (ASTP). Soviet cosmonauts Alexei Leonov (front) & Valeri Kubasov prior to the launch of their Soyuz-19 spacecraft on July 15, 1975. Soyuz-19 successfully docked with the American Apollo 18 spacecraft in orbit on July 17. The programme was intended to test a jointly-designed international docking mechanism. The US crew consisted of Thomas P. Stafford, Vance D. Brand & Donald K. Slayton.
