Caption: Apollo-Soyuz Project tests on 11 September 1974. Engineers and scientists in the USSR working to test the docking mechanisms for the Apollo-Soyuz Project. This model shows how the Apollo and Soyuz docking mechanisms were designed to fit together. The tests took place at the Soviet Union's Space Research Institute. The Apollo-Soyuz Project was a joint spaceflight project between the USA and the USSR. Two Soviet cosmonauts in a Soyuz capsule successfully docked with an Apollo capsule carrying three US astronauts. The two crews exchanged gifts through the docking mechanism. The spacecraft then separated and redocked several times. The crews launched on 15 July 1975, and landed on 21 (Soyuz) and 24 (Apollo) July 1975.
